Lust

In LUST, by Nobel Prizewinner Elfriede Jelinek, Hermann is the manager of a paper mill in an Austrian ski resort. Dictatorial and tyrannical, he sexually abuses his wife, Gerti, on a routine basis. Finally, Gerti thinks she has found a way out--his name is Michael, and he is a young student ambitious for a life in Austrian politics. A condemnation of the myth of romance, and a defense of female sexuality, Jelinek`s novel, published in 1989, examines the uses and abuses of love, sex, and power from a markedly feminist standpoint.
